Since 1996, there have been many different versions of the Tamagotchi. The original two are known as P1 and P2 to collectors, and they have a lot fewer features than the later Tamagotchi models. There have been many special edition Tamagotchi as well! They typically only feature different shell designs, but some of them have different characters or features as well. Many of these have only been released in Japan, or were only available for a limited time.

The first color Tamagotchi was released in 2008. Since then, most modern Tamagotchi feature color screens. The last Tamagotchi to not feature a colored screen was the Tamagotchi Friends, released in 2012. These models are typically more expensive due to the fact that they sold for more originally, and are newer than other Tamagotchi that are found on sites like eBay.
