Tamagotchi P1/P2
The Japanese packaging for the P1 (left) and P2 (right)
JP Release Date: November 23rd, 1996
NA/EU Release Date: May 1st, 1997

The original Tamagotchi (たまごっち) is the simplest of Tamagotchi, but also one of the most famous. It has three buttons just like every model after, but only features one game. On the P1, this is a guessing game where the player tries to guess which way the Tamagotchi is going to look. On the P2, it's a hi-lo number guessing game. The background on the screen is a checkerboard patter on the P1, while on the P2 it's a wavy design.

The gameplay for these is relatively easy to keep up with. There are 8 icons/features, and many of them you don't have to use often. The 8 features are Feed, Light, Bathroom, Health, Play, Medicine, Attention and Discipline. Many of these are self explanatory, or are explained further in the instructions.

The Tamagotchi needs to be taken care of well so it will live a long happy life. The characters you can get depend on how well you take care of your pet. The Attention icon is there so you can keep tabs on how happy, healthy and full your Tamagotchi is. It is easy to overfeed your Tamagotchi though, so watch out! Don't spoil your pet - give it just the right amount of attention.

The P1 and P2 have completely different sets of characters, but they both have special characters that aren't listed in the instructions. For international audiences, these characters are Bill on the P1 and Zatchi on the P2. Japanese audiences get three special characters - Oyajitchi, Sekitoritchi, and Charitchi! Oyajitchi appears on the Japanese P1, and Sekitoritchi and Charitchi appear on the Japanese P2. However, the P2 in Japan had two versions. Sekitoritchi appears on the P2 V1 and Charitchi appears on the P2 V2.

P1 and P2 were never actually used by Bandai in naming their pets, but they're commonly used by Tamagotchi fans to say that they're talking about the original Tamagotchi. It's so much simpler than saying "the 1996/1997 Tamagotchi", isn't it?
